Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. Bound in red ribbed cloth with gilt decorations, 336 pp., clean bright and tight. This is a scarce early history of Elkhart County, Indiana. The author was an editor of the Goshen Democrat in the early 1900s and interviewed pioneers who were already in their 80s and 90s about their recollections of early days in the county. He also used the earliest accounts obtainable. Interesting stories such as being pursed by wolves and ending up treed for an entire night. Another account related how when the household was secure in their cabin wolves started pushing at the door and were getting close to pushing it in when it was braced against them. In the same event a burning candle was placed in the window so the wolves wold not come near it. In the early to mid 1800s game was plentiful. People had to make their own clothing, soap, etc. One Goshen women recalled how when they wanted a fire they either went to a neighbor to borrow some or else used flint and steel. For light they had tallow-dips, pieces of cotton dipped in tallow. When they finally had candles they had "a beautiful, steady light." The author tried to deal with all the towns in the county, some no longer in existence. Elsewhere he mentioned how it took twice as long in days as it did in hours [1930s] to get from Fort Wayne to Elkhart. He talks about the frequent visits of Johnny Appleseed, the founding, early settlement and development of Nappanee, etc. A hard to come by book filled with local history .…
