Prag schloß er 1861 mit der Promotion ab und wurde Assistent und wurde 1864 Vertreter des Lehrstuhlinhabers am Gerichtsmedizinischen Institut. 1865 für forensische Medizin habilitiert, wurde er 1869 o.Prof. der Gerichtsmedizin und Staatsarzneikunde in Innsbruck, 1875 in Wien. Hofmann gilt als einer der Begründer der modernen forensischen Medizin. Als Landesgerichtsanatom und Prosektor der Stadt verfügte er über eine umfangreiche Forschungsgrundlage, baute das Museum seines Instituts auf und erreichte die Berufung von Gerichtsmedizinern als ständige Sachverständige beim Landesgericht. Er befaßte sich mit Unterscheidungsmöglichkeiten zwischen natürlichen und gewaltsamen Todesursachen, gerichtlicher Psychopathologie und Toxikologie. Seine Schüler trugen Hofmanns Lehre an zahlreiche europäische und japanische Fakultäten. Er wurde 1884 nobilitiert und war seit 1888 Präsident des Obersten Sanitätsrats. Er schrieb u.a. ein Lehrbuch der gerichtlichen Medizin (1878, (11)1927). - Basch, (1837 - 1905): Nach dem Medizinstudium in Prag und Wien war Basch als Assistenz- bzw. Sekundararzt tätig. 1865 reiste er als ärztlicher Begleiter mit Kaiser Maximilian nach Mexiko, leitete dort das Militärspital in Puebla und wurde zum Leibarzt des Kaisers ernannt. Nach dessen Erschießung kehrte er nach Europa zurück, habilitierte sich 1869 für experimentelle Pathologie und wurde 1878 als Extraordinarius dieses Fachs an die Univ. Wien berufen. Er war Abteilungschef der Wiener Poliklinik und wirkte im Sommer als Badearzt in Marienbad. Neben zahlreichen medizinischen Abhandlungen, u.a. über die Physiologie des Kreislaufs, veröffentlichte Basch 1868 Erinnerungen aus Mexico, Geschichte der letzten zehn Monate des Kaiserreichs.
