Ce livre etudie, principalement a partir d'archives francaises jusqu'alors ignorees des historiens, une periode confuse de l'histoire de la Perse. Il met en valeur l'originalite de la diplomatie francaise malgre la modestie de ses interets en Perse. Il rassemble une documentation de premiere main, dans les langues europeennes et en persan, qui eclaire d'un jour nouveau les conflits des Occidentaus pour la domination sur le Moyen-Orient. Olivier Bast, allocataire de recherche a l'institut francais de recherche en Iran (Teheran), est a la fois historien et orientaliste.
