Soft cover. Condizione: New. The history of Dalits in India is commonly presented as one of discrimination. Dalit understandings of the past, however, go beyond this and are intricately connected to the emotional space of the 'under-privileged'. They resist attempts to homogenise the community and its experiences, assert that the term 'Dalit' houses not one but many identities shaped by complex social processes, and call for the study of new sources and the adoption of new methodologies in constructing the histories of the marginalised. Exploring the diverse facets of the history and cultural experiences of Dalits, Identity, Conflict, and Counter-Narratives studies how this multiplicity aids our understanding of what it means to be Dalit. The ten essays in this volume engage with a wide spectrum of Dalit realities, from the community histories of theyyam artistes in Kerala and the soldiers-turned-acrobats and leather-workers of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, to the politics of lower-caste social mobility in West Bengal, of identity formation in Tamil Nadu, and of reservations in north and south India. They chart narratives of suppression, assertion, negotiation, and adaptation against the backdrop of larger historical developments in the subcontinent. Foregrounded in this attempt is the image of the Dalit as warrior, entertainer, craftsperson, cultural custodian, priest, leader, thinker, visionary, self-interested political agentin sum, a kaleidoscope of incisive, rigorous regional histories that have been overlooked or oversimplified in the national imagination. Written by leading scholars from all over India, this volume is a pioneering contribution to the growing field of caste studies that will prove invaluable to students of history, sociology, and political science, as well as to interested readers.…

Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. This volume explores the nature of interactions between the East and the West in the field of medicine. It brings into focus conditions and historical processes through which there was an interaction between the social and medical domains, particularly under the rubric of colonialism. It discusses India's medical tradition and the challenges it faced when modern medical system entered the country; the exchange of knowledge between India and the west; and theinfluence of local medicinal knowledge on its colonial counterpart. The exchange of ideas and that of tradition was not a simple journey but rather a long and tortuous trajectory which was characterized byboth assimilation as well as initiative which sought to differentiate one set of ideas from another. The level of interaction was seldom smooth and it was often ridden with the languages of dominance and hegemony. Through specific examples and case studies, the book also analyses various ailments and the changing medical domain from the point of view of the existing social norms/conditions. Hardcover. Condizione: New. Lower-caste thinkers made a crucial intervention in the conceptualization of modern India by claiming that there could hardly be any discussion of colonial India without a critical interrogation of the caste system. Dalit Intellectuals: Ideas, Struggles and the Vision is an exploration of a range of interpretations of Dalit intellectual traditions through contributions which emerged from a special panel on Dalit History and Politics. Dedicated to Professor K.N. Panikkar, who introduced the study of intellectual history of modern India, these essays explore Dalit intellectual thought beginning with Ambedkar s re-envisioning of modern India to the Adi-Dravida movement in colonial Tamil Nadu, the emergence of Kanshi Ram from obscurity to prominence as a public intellectual, autobiographies that led to the making of Dalit intellectuals and lastly, the late emergence of Dalit intellectual traditions in Bengal. This volume brings to the fore a new intellectual journey, revolutionizing social categories which had hitherto remained outside the domain of respectability and scholarship, and steering the wheel towards newer methods of history writing.…
