Hardcover. ix, [1], 55 p.; 3 il.; 19 cm. [Batley gave a full transcription of the Adversaria to Bilney's college, Trinity Hall, Cambridge] Contents: Preface -- I Biographical sketch -- Published works of Thomas Bilney -- III The history of Bilney's Vulgate [Lyons, 1520, since 1588 in the library of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge] -- IV Selected Adversaria [from 300+ written in Latin in his Bible]: (a) typical quotations, (b) the author's opinions -- V Important events, 1511-31. -- `We have already accounted Bilney to be a careful, painstaking student. We may now give special attention to some Notes which express the writer's personal opinions. These thoughts are of value to us as revealing the real thoughts of Bilney. Not written for publication, coming from the man himself, they are more trustworthy than the second-hand information of Foxe and More.' (p. 35) -- At Genesis 3.5: `Liberum arbitrium mendacium' (p. 38) -- Exodus 1: `Rex Egipti iussit obstetricibus vt occiderent masculos--Deo magis obedientiam quam hominibus'; I Kings 18: `Helias regem non veretur sed ei peccatum in faciem exprobrat audendum concionatori' (p. 36) -- `Bilney is obviously zealous for right and just dealing. The poor are the true Temple of the Lord. The goods of the Church are the goods of the poor. A pure Church is acceptable to God. The Bishops must be faithful, unlike some contemporary prelates. Would that God would raise up once more a true prophet! .But in his attitude to Authority we find that Bilney is extremely bold. For just cause a King may be rebuked. Custom may not be blindly followed. Bilney states most emphatically that the Church can err, so there is no certain guidance in `the voice of the Church'.'(p. 49 f.) Soft cover. Condizione: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Evanston, IL: Clark Publishing Company, 1956. The June, 1956 issue of Fate Magazine (issue no. 75) in Raymond A. Palmer's now-legendary paranormal-reporting non-fiction enterprise, which began with, in its first issue, Kenneth Arnold's cover account of flying crescents which "skipped like saucers across a pond", an event which, for whatever reason, kicked off the modern era of UFO events. After that, Fate introduced countless events which remain, to this day, fodder for paranormal documentaries and investigation. 12mo, illustrated perfect-bound wraps, 130 pp. A Near Fine copy - very near fine, with just touch edge wear on a small scale, light sunning at rear cover top and bottom (see scans), and of course some modest age-toning to the newsprint paper pages, which remain supple. High Grade, particularly for a periodical which often shows substantial wear from use. See scans. See the scanned image of the contents page for the articles herein, which cover such topics as UFOS Over Japan; Parapsychology; Ghost on British Highways; Teleportation; Precognition; Appolonius of Tyana; Transformation; Time Travel; The Headless Horseman of Belmont; an Unruly Poltergeist; and of course much, much else, including the standard Departments, always engrossing in themselves, all on various other paranormal or inexplicable phenomena. Interior art and photography is largely uncredited. A piece of paranormal history, and an example of a unique branch of Americana, in very highly collectible condition. Please see scans. l50n.…
