The Army Bureau of Current Affairs (ABCA) was set up to educate and raise the morale of Britons serving in WW2. It issued two fortnightly publications during 1941-45: "War", which contai…ned news, and "Current Affairs", which addressed a particular subject in more depth, not to be published, and exclusively for members of His Majesty's Service. The Current Affairs series was also reprinted by the Canadians. This issue describes the Middle East's place at the historical centre of civilisation, its importance in the current War, and the strategic importance of Baghdad; the strategic core (a triangle with Cairo, Basrah, and Mount Ararat at its points); the 5 seas and 3 countries on the flanks of this triangle (Arabia, Iran, Turkey); Turkey's strategic position (highlighting its vulnerable locations); and Turkey's commitments via various post-Ottoman Empire treaties. Arabia is discussed in the context of its proximity to the Kirkuk-Haifa pipeline and shipping lines in the Red Sea and Persian Gulf, its concerns over the situation in Palestine, and as home to the Holy Places of Mecca and Medina which were at that time considered to be under British protection. The map, titled "The Middle East", shows the above triangle, oilfields and oil pipelines, and mountains. Professor Baxter, Regius Professor of Ecclesiastical History at the University of St Andrews, was known as a writer and a lecturer to the Army.
