Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. Hardcover, x + 154 pages, b&w illustrations in text, NOT ex-library. Clean and bright condition with unmarked text, free of inscriptions and stamps, firmly bound. Minor handling wear only. Dust jacket shows a bit of cosmetic edgewear. -- An exploration of the evolving relationship between text and material form in literature, this volume examines how the physicality of the book itself influences interpretation and meaning, tracing developments from modernist innovations to the contemporary concept of liberature. Through a series of critical essays, the authors analyze various literary works, demonstrating how material aspects such as typography, layout, and design become integral to the narrative experience. This scholarly work provides valuable insights into the intersection of literary theory, material culture, and textual studies. -- Contents: Introduction: Modernist Roots of Liberature / Katarzyna Bazarnik; Book as a New Genre: The Book Illustrations of Bruno Schulz / Ariko Kato; Modernism in a Rear-view Mirror: McLuhan's COUNTERBLAST of 1954 and 1969 / Izabela Curyllo-Klag; Cage and Liberature / Michal Palmowski; The Hybrid Book Genre of Word & Image Narratives: Results of an Artistic Research Project / Jeanine Eerdekens; Close Reading of the Liberatic Canon: On Oka-leczenie by Zenon Fajfer and Katarzyna Bazarnik / Agnieszka Przybyszewska; Liberature and Person: An Anthropological Question / Emiliano Ranocchi; Appendices: Source Texts [Liberature: Appendix to a Dictionary of Literary Terms / Zenon Fajfer; Liberature or Total Literature (Appendix to the 'Appendix to the Dictionary of Literary Terms') / Zenon Fajfer; Lyric, Epic, Dramatic, Liberature / Zenon Fajfer]; Contributors; Index -- Liberature - coined from the Latin liber - is simultaneously a movement in contemporary Polish literature, and a term referring to literary works that integrate text and material features of the book into an organic whole in accordance with the author's design. The present volume collects essays inspired by this theoretical concept, first proposed by Polish poet Zenon Fajfer in 1999, but soon picked up and elaborated on by international scholars. As noted by the contributing authors, preceding Jessica Pressman's idea of "bookishness" and coinciding with N. Katherine Hayles' fundamental writings, liberature appeared at the end of the 20th century, "as if to resume and systematize the intuitions and provocative statements" of writers concerned with the future of the book. It fits into a wider turn towards the recognition of the embodied nature of information in anthropology, literary, textual, media and AI studies. Yet its distinctness consists in the fact that it was suggested by a creative writer, and that it proposes to see the authorially-shaped materiality of writing in terms of a literary genre. The essays collected here present the modernist roots and inspirations of liberature, address the semantics of typography and the question of the materiality of literary writing, and explore how the "abstract body of the printed book is transformed into an experience of embodiment." The volume is completed with a reprint of Fajfer's seminal essays with a view to making them more available to English-speaking readers.…

Paperback. Condizione: New. This book discusses the concept of liberature, a term coined by the Polish poet Zenon Fajfer in 1999 to refer to a kind of writing that fuses text with its material form into a conceptual whole in the space of the book. In her monograph, described by the author as "the fruit of miscegenation between a scholar and a creative writer," Katarzyna Bazarnik explains how liberature is indebted to modernist explorations of the materiality of writing pointed out by Jerome McGann, as well as practices of "presentification" described by Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht. She flags affinities between liberature and related concepts: N. Katherine Hayles's technotexts, Jessica Pressman's bookishness, Lori Emerson's reading-writing interfaces, and Alison Gibbons's analyses of multimodal literature. Finally, reading liberature through contemporary genre theory, she proposes to see it as a multimodal, literary genre bound to the architecture of the material book.…

Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - For many Central-European countries, the inter- and post-war periods marked the beginning of their statehood and entailed the laying of the foundations for literary language itself. Experimental tendencies became a laboratory of bold and ambiguous visions of the world, inspiring many artists to join in the process of rebuilding their communities. Unlike other parts of the world, in Poland experiments thus conceived were not just about contesting bourgeois habits and forms, or testing the boundaries of social and aesthetic conventions. On the contrary, revolutionary-oriented circles supported the building of new centres of intellectual life, joined the cultural mainstream in the broadest possible sense, and, with time, became an important point of reference for the entire panorama of literary and artistic life.…

Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Refresh the Book contains reflections on the multimodal nature of the book, focusing on its changing perception, functions, forms, and potential in the digital age. Offering an overview of key concepts and approaches, such as liberature, technotexts, and bookishness, this volume of essays addresses the specificity of the printed book as a complex cultural phenomenon. It discusses diverse forms of representation and expression, both in literary and non-literary texts, as well as in artist's books. Of special interest are these aspects of the book which resist remediation into the digital form. Finally, the volume contains an extensive section devoted to artistic practice as research, discussing the book as the synthesis of the arts, and site for performative aesthetic activity.
