He then discusses the variation by degree of dependence on agriculture, total family income, type of farm, and tenure of farm. The author concludes by noting that regional differences in fertility can be largely attributed to the proportion of nonwhite farm operators in the southern United States, concluding that the high birth rate among southern farm families was primarily due to the high fertility of nonwhite farm families, who at that time made up a quarter of all souther farm families. Despite the data being somewhat dated, this study provides a unique look at the fertility patterns of rural farm families during a time of significant societal change.
