Beau étudie la croissance de l'ongle et décrit les sillons ou dépressions "qui dépendent d'un enrayement temporaire des fonctions végétatives de la matrice de l'ongle" et "qui restent sur les ongles pendant un certain temps comme les vestiges, ou si l'on veut, comme les signes rétrospectifs de la maladie d'où ils émanent." *** FIRST DESCRIPTION OF TRANSVERSE NAIL PLATE DEPRESSIONS (BEAU'S LINES) *** Beau donne une description précise de ces dépressions transversales, prédominants sur l'ongle du pouce, et dont la largeur indique la durée. Beau indique les maladies sous l'influence desquelles elles se produisent (maladies infectieuses et états inflammatoires) et montre, compte-tenu de la vitesse de croissance de l'ongle du pouce (1 mm/semaine), que la distance entre la dépression et la matrice de l'ongle permet d'indiquer à quel moment la maladie a existé. Beau laissa son nom à ces dépressions unguéales (lignes de Beau). Joseph-Honoré-Simon Beau (1806-1865), ancien interne et chef de Clinique, fut médecin de l'Hôpital de la Charité, agrégé libre à la Faculté de médecine de Paris, membre de l'Académie de médecine. Il est l'auteur de nombreuses publications (le plus grand nombre concernant la cardiologie).
