Its late entry during a time of rapid turboprop and jet aircraft development seemed to promise it a short service life. Yet during the Vietnam War, the C-123 carved an unforgettable place for itself in USAF history, performing essential tactical and paratroop logistics, clandestine missions and an infamous role in Operation Ranch Hand aerial spraying. After Vietnam, significant numbers of the Provider were supplied to foreign air forces, and the aircraft saw ongoing service with the USAF Reserve up to 1986. Although it had a limited civilian career, the C-123 is remembered today for its association with numerous Hollywood motion pictures, its involvement with drug smuggler turned DEA operative Barry Seal and covert use in what became known as the Iran-Contra Affair.
