Je nachdem, wie die Bedingungen waren und welche Sprachpolitik von den Kolonisten verfolgt wurde, haben sich auf Basis des Sprachkontaktes unterschiedliche sprachliche Phänomene, z.B. Pidgins und Kreolsprachen, entwickelt. Unter einer Kreolsprache wird in dieser Arbeit eine Sprache verstanden, die ihren Ursprung in der Zeit des Sklavenhandels hat und aus dem Sprachkontakt der Sprache(n) der Kolonisten mit den verschiedenen afrikanischen Sprachen der Sklaven entstanden ist. Eine Kreolsprache ist unter anderem auf den Kapverdischen Inseln durch den Kontakt des Portugiesischen mit verschiedenen afrikanischen Sprachen entstanden. Lange Zeit wurde davon ausgegangen, dass es sich bei Kreolsprachen um Sprachen handle, dien keine ausgereifte Grammatik hätten und "niedere Varietäten" der europäischen Basissprachen seien (vgl. Pratas, 2004). Diese Arbeit wird sich mit der kapverdischen Kreolsprache (Caboverdiano) und ihren Entstehungsbedingungen befassen. Auch wird auf die Situation der Kreolsprache im Vergleich zum Portugiesischen eingegangen. Das 2. Kapitel enthält nach einigen grundlegenden Informationen zu den Kapverdischen Inseln einen Überblick über die historische Entwicklung der Kapverden, um die heutige Situation besser verstehen und einordnen zu können. Anschließend wird in Kapitel 2.2 auf die Sprachensituation, die Sprachpolitik und ihre Umsetzung auf den Kapverdischen Inseln eingegangen. Dabei wird es darum gehen zu klären, welche Sprachen auf den Inseln verbreitet sind, welches soziale Prestige und welchen offiziellen Status sie haben. In Abschnitt 2.3 wird auf das Bildungswesen in Bezug auf die sprachlichen Gegebenheiten eingegangen. Dabei geht es zum einen um den Einfluss, den das Bildungswesen auf die Entstehung der heutigen Sprachensituation hatte und zum anderen darum, welche Sprachen heutzutage in den Schulen gelehrt werden und was Unterrichtssprache ist.
