Beigegeben ist zunächst die deutsche Übersetzung, die von an der Abfassung des Direktoriums beteiligten Mitgliedern des Sekretariates besorgt und vom Sekretariat der deutschsprachigen Presse zur Verfügung gestellt wurde. Bei dieser Übersetzung wurden die Anmerkungen, soweit sie mit dem Text in besonders enger Verbindung standen, in Klammern in den Text eingefügt, so daß den 21 Anmerkungen des lateinischen Textes nur 5 Anmerkungen der deutschen Übersetzung gegenüberstehen. Ferner enthält unsere Ausgabe eine deutsche Übersetzung der ?Einführung in das Ökumenisehe Direktorium" von Bischof Jan Willebrands. Sie ist der lateinisch-deutschen Ausgabe des Ökumenischen Direktoriums (r. Teil) entnommen, die 1967 im Rahmen der Konfessionskundlichen Schriften des JohannAdam-Möhler-Institutes in Paderborn erschienen ist. Diese Ausgabe enthält Erläuterungen von E. Stakemeier, denen der Herausgeber für seinen Kommentar viele Anregungen verdankt. Außer dem Kommentar des Herausgebers ist unserer Ausgabe eine Ansprache Papst Pauls VI. beigegeben, die von diesem am 28. April 1967 vor den Mitgliedern, Konsultoren, Offizialen des Sekretariates für die Einheit der Christen in einer feierlichen Audienz gehalten wurde. Diese Audienz wurde dem Sekretariat naeh Abschluß seiner Arbeiten am ersten Teil des Direktoriums gewährt, und der Papst kündigte dabei die unmittelbare Veröffentlichung des Ökumenischen Direktoriums an. Die Ansprache stellt eine ökumenische Bilanz im Hinblick auf die Früchte des Konzils und die ökumenisch bedeutsamen Ereignisse der nachkonziliaren Zeit in der Sicht des Papstes dar und skizziert ?in außerordentlich klaren und bestimmten Worten die Haltung Roms und der ganzen katholischen Kirche gegenüber dem Ökumenismus" (vgl. From a present-day perspective, these rich images provide invaluable insights into past realities as well as interconnections between different visual systems. However, beyond stunning images, the materiality of wall paintings implicates a whole range of specific technical choices and gestures executed during the artistic process. The bodies of knowledge immanent in the practice of plaster and pigment preparation, in the application of paint and in the conception and execution of compositions allow us to compare the wall painting corpora of the Eastern Mediterranean on a technical level and to trace differences and similarities in a cross-cultural perspective.Evolved from an interdisciplinary workshop held at the 10th ICAANE in Vienna, this volume provides insights into the various technical approaches and underlying bodies of knowledge in the different wall painting traditions of the Eastern Mediterranean and West Asia and throws light on the way and extent of their possible interwovenness. Moreover, it seeks to overcome regional as well as disciplinary isolation of technical studies by bringing together authors of different scientific backgrounds ranging between Conservational Studies, Archaeometry, Prehistory, Egyptology, as well as Western Asiatic and Classical Archaeology.
