SB xiii+83pp Illustrated 2020 N&MP Reprint of 1920 Original EditionPublished Price £9.99 In this remarkable guidebook, originally published in 1920, Beckles Willson, an opponent of the rebuilding of Ypres, presented his powerful argument against the redevelopment, and presented his vision of it as âThe Sacred City of Ypresâ, by telling the history of Ypres before and during the Great War.ÂWho was Major Henry Beckles Willson?Major Henry Beckles Willson served as a senior officer with the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the Great War. He served as an (acting) Major attached to the HQ staff and was invalided out in 1916. Major Henry Beckles Willson was the last Town Major of Ypres. He was in command of the legendary ruins in 1919 and was instrumental in the development of Ypres as the focal point of Remembrance and in the creation of the Ypres League. He was also pivotal in the creation of the Imperial War Museum in his role as the museumâs field agent, where he believed the collections should reflect the detail of battle and involvement of ordinary soldiers at ground level. During WW2 Beckles Willson was interned in France and died in Beaulieu-sur-mer in September 1942 with rank of Lieutenant Colonel, aged 73.

Bottom corners and spine ends have bumping. Gold gilt top page ends are bright. Heavy soiling and shelf wear to spine, edges and back cover.Lighter soiling and shelf wear to front cover. Previous owners very nice bookplate is neatly pasted to the inside front cover. Hinges are cracked but still attached. Heavy foxing to inside front and back covers. Lighter foxing to text mostly along the spine are. Text yellowed due to age otherwise clean and unmarked. The 12 full page, color illustrations are all present and in fine condition. Romance of Empire Series edited by John Lang. Primarily intended for the younger reader tells of the doings of "the valiant heroes, the bloodthirsty villains, the virtuous ladies who played their part in the Canadian drama". Blue cloth lightly rubbed; slight flaking to spine's otherwise still bright gilt stamping; front board's gilt lettering remains bright too. Blue top edge; foxing/soiling to text block's fore-edge and bottom edge. Endpapers toned/foxed; past owner's personal bookplate on front pastedown; some interior foxing mostly occurring to b/w plates and their adjacent leaves but otherwise most pages are clean. The Battle of Mount Sorrel lasted for almost two weeks and cost the Canadians over 8,000 casualties. Having lost the first two phases of the battle, the Canadians achieved victory in the final operation. Careful planning and concentrated artillery bombardments had begun to tip the balance on the First World War battlefields in favour of attackers over entrenched defenders.
