Los cristianos no están al abrigo de esas corrientes de ideas y de la deformación de perspectivas que ellas entrañan. Constituyen para ellos una doble ingratitud. Demasiado numerosos son aquellos que, inconscientemente, no hay para qué decirlo, hacen de Dios un artesano, un instrumento de su éxito terrestre, o bien de su salvación de ultratumba. Eso aparece en sus oraciones, en que la petición interesada sobrepasa a la alabanza y a la adoración; en sus acciones, en que la primacía de la eficacia sería de buen grado erigida en dogma; en su fe, por fin, que se emparentaría a veces con las propagandas de aquí abajo -ya fuesen, para emplear la expresión consagrada, de "izquierda" o de "derecha"- y que modelaría a bajo precio un Dios de figura y talla humanas. Dios en la periferia, en lugar de estar en el centro de todo, la idolatría del hombre sustituida al sentido de Dios, tal es la gran herejía de este tiempo, de la que uno de vosotros, señores, escribía esta semana utilizando una cita paradójica, pero penetrante, que no hay ateos, "sino solamente idólatras o iconoclastas".
