Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Original gilt-titled blue cloth 14x20cm. Printed by H.W. Smith at the Times Press, Bombay, and published by Mohamad Amin, Superintendent of History Office, Bhopal. iv, ii, (1), 301, (1)pp + (24)pp plates including colour portrait frontispiece and 23 full-page b/w photos. English text translated from the original Urdu by B. Ghosal, Superintendent of Archaeology, Bhopal. Covers very good with some marks, interiors near fine, lightly foxed to the first and last leaves. The plates are unindexed, but the total count of 24 matches that of OCLC 244097777. Rare. Shah Jahan Begum (1838-1901) ruled over the Princely State of Bhopal during 1844-60 and 1868-1901. (Her mother Sikander Begum acted as Regent in the first period, and as the British appointed Ruler in the interim). She is credited with wide-ranging improvements to the tax system, military, police, and infrastructure, with implementing the first Census, introducing the first local postage stamps, major buildings, and for her contributions to Zakat and mosque building including the Shah Jahan Mosque in Woking, and the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College at Aligarh. She wrote about her reign, on religion and culture, and a manual of advice for women which went into remarkably intimate detail about her marriages. She was succeeded by her daughter Sultan Jehan Begum, the author of this work, with whom she had not spoken for several years. In her Preface, Sultan Jehan notes their estrangement upfront, and deciding not to go into the "painful and unhappy incidents" that led to it, states that writing her mother's biography has been both a duty and auspicious: "as good for her as prayers offered for the weal of her soul". Chapters cover her early life, second marriage, reforms, ministers, reassuming control and loyalty to the British, responses to the death of Queen Victoria, ceremonial functions and viceregal visits, travels (Durbars and decorations), her character, literary output, domestic ceremonies, final illness and death, with several supporting appendices. The photos include major buildings around Bhopal, portraits of her relatives, and of senior British figures including Victoria, Curzon, Ripon, Roberts among others.…
