VON SIEGFRIED BEHRSING. Märici, die Göttin mit dem Eber- (Schweine-) Kopf oder mit dem Eber (bzw. Schwein) als vabana (in Indien auch Vajravarähi, in Tibet Od-zer-can-ma, in China Mo-li-chih, Chi-kuang Fo-mu oder Tou-mu, in Japan Marishi-Ten genannt), gehört zu den interessanten Göttergestalten, bei denen das ihnen beigeordnete Tier auf die ursprüngliche Tiernatur der Gottheit hinweist. Bei einer der bekanntesten Ebergottheiten , Visnu in seinem vaTaha-avatara., sind z. B. neben Plastiken, bei denen er wie Märici mit drei Köpfen, darunter einem Eberkopf, erscheint, Darstellungen üblich, die ihn als Eber, meist zusammen mit der als Frau gebildeten Erde, zeigen. Bei Marici sind wir für. so frühe Stadien auf Vermutungen angewiesen. Trotzdem können wir von der Voraussetzung einer Verwandtschaft der verschiedenen Ebergottheiten (Visnu als Eber, Vajravarähi, Märici) untereinander ausgehen. Märici weist aber neben ihrem Charakter als Ebergöttin noch andere Züge auf. So ist sie manchmal Trägerin von Sonne und Mond, viele ihrer Formen betonen eine kriegerische, andere wieder eine friedliche Seite. Alle diese Züge sind nicht Sondergut der Märici und treten zudem meist gemischt auf. Daher bietet sie uns ein sehr vielgestaltiges Bild, das sich oft schwer gegen andere Gottheiten abgrenzen läßt. Darüber hinaus gibt es Formen, bei denen Eber oder Schwein fehlen, und eine Identifizierung der ihres wichtigsten Erkennungszeichens beraubten Göttin ohne Inschriften oder ähnliche Hilfsmittel oft unmöglich wäre. Diese vielgestaltige Göttin wird auch von verschiedenen Religionen in Anspruch genommen. In Indien wird sie sowohl dem Buddhismus wie dem Hinduismus zugeordnet; ersterer hat sie als Emanation des Dhyäni-Buddha Vairocana in sein Pantheon auf genommen. Und in China teilen sich heute noch Buddhisten und Taoisten in die Verehrung der Märici bzw. Toumu. / Das Beduinenkostüm in Tripolitanien von Ernst Rackow Im Sommer 1939 reiste ich mit Unterstützung der Preußischen Akademie der Wissenschaften und des Museums für Völkerkunde in Berlin nach Tripolitanien, um dort eine möglichst genaue Aufnahme des Beduinenkostüms zu machen. Es standen mir die Monate Juli und August dafür zur Verfügung. Nachdem ich im Jahre 1937 das zentralalgerische Nomaden-Zelt dargestellt hatte, hätte es eigentlich näher gelegen, zunächst einmal auch die Beduinentracht Algeriens zu beschreiben. Leider war das wegen der inzwischen eingetretenen Änderungen in den politischen Verhältnissen undurchführbar, so daß mir, um nicht das gewährte Stipendium ungenutzt zu lassen, nur noch das italienische Nordafrika offen stand. Dieses war natürlich in Bezug auf ein ernsthaftes Studium der materiellen Kultur der Beduinen genau so Neuland wie Algerien, doch schwindet in Letzterem das alte eingeborene Kulturgut schneller dahin. Es im geschlossenen Bilde noch festzuhalten, wird von Jahr zu Jahr schwieriger werden. In Tripolitanien wählte ich das Kostüm nur eines einzigen Stammes, der Nuail, der in vergangener Zeit in Tunisien und zwar im Küstengebiet des Golfs von Gabes, sein Weidegebiet hatte.
