No Jacket. 1st. 3/4 tan leather and marbled paper hardback in good plus condition due to some hairline; mostly closed-splitting at the front cover outside hinge at the top a few inches vertical and the bottom about 4-5 inches vertical closed tear. Tightly hinged but outside joint starting on both end…s. Other very light wear and minor rubs. Contains an original "Hamlin Library of Hebron Academy" colored yellow bookplate from about the same time period as when the book was published mounted to the front pastedown. Also has has an old ink pen inscription in period ink "Presented to Hebron Academy by Hon. H. Hamblin 1876" - probably not in Hamblin's hand-writing but a holograph by a librarian or the person who originally accepted the book for the library. Also laid in is an original holograph letter in William Belknap's obvious hand writng and signed and dated: " Wash. D.C. Oct. 22 1876 / Mr. James A. Edgerby[?] Great Falls N.H. / Dear Sir: I regret that I am unable to comply with your request. I have notes + letters, but they are of a character which prevents my parting with them. I would gladly meet your wishes if in my power - Wm.W.Belknap. The letter is mounted to a more modern piece of paper as a background and was probably removed from an album showing light trimming. Blackish-brown ink original in good or better condition.

Very slight wear to the corners, gutters weak but holding and a very small hole on the spine. Still a very good, solid copy of a very rare regimental history. This very green regiment arrived…at Shiloh on the day of the battle and reportedly were issued ammunition for the first time and marched into battle. The Regiment's commander, Col. H. T. Reid reported that "Our flag staff was shot through and our colors riddled with bullets; for two hours, from 10 to 12 o'clock, we maintained our position, our men fighting like veterans. The undersigned was severely wounded by a musket ball through the neck, which knocked him from his horse, paralyzed fro the time, but recovering in a short time, remounted and continued in command.". This copy dedicated "To Mr. L. M. Teshell (?) Compliments of Major H. C. McArthur, 15th Iowa Vet. Vol. Infantry". This was presumably at the time of publication. Following that inscription, in a much shakier hand, is "H. C. McArthur Des Moines, Iowa, Nov. 20, 1924". McArthur was commissioned a Lieutenant at the Regiment's organization and promoted to Major. The book indicates that McArthur was severely wounded in 1864 near Atlanta, but recovered and was a merchant in Omaha, Nebraska following the war.
