G. Wells. Reader's Digest is an American general-interest family magazine, published 10 times a year. Formerly based in Chappaqua, New York, it is now headquartered in midtown Manhattan. The magazine was founded in 1922 by DeWitt Wallace and Lila Bell Wallace. For many years, Reader's Digest was the best-selling consumer magazine in the United States. According to Mediamark Research (2006), Reader's Digest reaches more readers with household incomes of $100,000+ than Fortune, The Wall Street Journal, Business Week, and Inc. combined. In 1922, DeWitt Wallace started the magazine while he was recovering from shrapnel wounds received in World War I. Wallace had the idea to gather a sampling of favorite articles on many subjects from various monthly magazines, sometimes condensing and rewriting them, and to combine them into one magazine. The Wallaces initially hoped the journal could provide $5,000 of net income. Wallace's assessment of what the potential mass-market audience wanted to read led to rapid growth. By 1929, the magazine had 290,000 subscribers and had a gross income of $900,000 a year. The first international edition was published in the United Kingdom in 1938. By the 40th anniversary of Reader's Digest, it had 40 international editions, in 13 languages and Braille, and at one point, it was the largest-circulating journal in China, Mexico, Spain, Sweden, Peru, and other countries, with a total international circulation of 23 million. The magazine's format for several decades consisted of 30 articles per issue (one per day), along with an "Increase your Word Power" vocabulary quiz, a page of "Amusing Anecdotes" and "Personal Glimpses", two features of funny stories entitled "Humor in Uniform" and "Life in these United States", and a lengthier article at the end, usually condensed from a published book. Other regular features were "My Most Unforgettable Character" and the "Drama in Real Life" survival stories. These were all listed in the table of contents on the front cover. Presumed First Edition, First printing this issue.

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. The old world was never silent. It spoke through wings, weather, smoke, stars, trees, dreams, bones, water, and the strange hush before a sign appeared. The Druid's Book of Omens is a deep and atmospheric guide to the ancient art of reading signs in the natural world, rooted in Celtic tradition, folklore, seasonal wisdom, and the old belief that the living earth communicates through pattern, timing, and presence. From the raven on the roof to the mist over the valley, from the trembling candle flame to the dream that arrives with unusual weight, this book explores the many ways people once understood the world as meaningful. It follows the signs most closely associated with druidic imagination and Celtic folk memory, including birds, trees, weather, stars, smoke, fire, dreams, bones, casting lots, land animals, sacred waters, death omens, thresholds, and the ritual calendar of the year.Inside, readers will discover: Bird omens and the meaning of ravens, crows, swans, wrens, owls, cranes, herons, and eaglesTree signs connected with oak, ash, hawthorn, yew, rowan, elder, birch, willow, apple, and hazelWeather omens hidden in wind, mist, thunder, lightning, rainbows, frost, clouds, and strange lightStar and moon signs from the night sky, eclipses, comets, shooting stars, and sacred seasonal timingFire and smoke omens from hearth flame, candles, bonfires, incense, ash, sparks, and sudden extinguishingDream omens, prophetic sleep, symbolic images, ancestors, animals, water, houses, roads, and thresholdsBone casting, lots, ogham, stones, shells, and the old art of receiving pattern from chanceDeath omens, warning signs, household thresholds, silence, animal behaviour, and the ethics of interpretationThe Druid's Book of Omens does not treat omen reading as fear, fantasy, or blind superstition. It presents it as an old discipline of attention, shaped by landscape, memory, seasonal observation, and the human instinct to listen when the world behaves strangely. For readers of Celtic spirituality, druidism, folklore, divination, nature mysticism, ancient religion, and old folk belief, this book offers a rare and beautiful journey into the green language of the earth. The world is still speaking. This book teaches you how to listen. This item is printed on demand. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
