Rhode, who grew up in South Africa, recently liberated from apartheid, was confronted with new forms of creative expression that were more motivated by the individual spirit than dictated by political or social intent. This publication focuses on the influence of Arte povera from the early 1960s to the 1970s, which shaped Rhodes' hybrid street art aesthetic. In a creative dialogue with the Italian art movement, he transformed urban landscapes and interiors into fantasy worlds in which time and space are condensed and two-dimensional representations become the subject of three-dimensional interactions of a single protagonist.
