FIRST EDITION in French circa 1830, inscribed 1834, the first story is dated 1829 on its separate title page, the other 3 undated. Approximately 143 x 90 mm, 5¾ x 3½ inches, original black roan spine, marbled boards, gilt title to spine in double ruled gilt frame, pages: (4), 36, 36, 36, 36. Double sided advert leaf for Elliott'…s works bound after general title page. Each of the 4 stories has a title page, a delightful folding copper plate frontispiece, image size 118 x 160 (4½" x 6¼"), plus 2 engraved plates. Spine and corners slightly worn, a little marbled paper chipped off along board edges, rear endpaper removed, occasional very neat ink correction to error in French text, very little pencil scribble erased from a couple of margins, early inscriptions on endpapers, tiny chip to lower margin of 1 folding plate. A very good copy. Moon, Elliott, No.415; The Dartons, page 398, No.H425; Gumuchian 2388; Oppenheimer 828 and 829. Mary (Belson) Elliott (1794?-1870) was DartonÕs steadiest and most prolific author during the publisherÕs time at Holburn Hill, though very little is known about her life otherwise; her early works were published anonymously. The preface to her Innocent Poetry (1809) states that she and her sister ÒElizaÓ had an elderly, infirm…mother who they had to care for. It is possible that ÒElizaÓ was Elizabeth Belson, one of whose works was published by William Darton eight years later. The date of her marriage has been placed at 1819, but her husbandÕs identity has not been successfully established. It was initially thought that her spouse was London printer Edward Elliott; however, this has proven to be untrue when tested against the Census returns. Several of ElliotÕs works were reprinted in America and Darton eventually published French translations of some of her work, though she seems to have worked with no other English publisher than Darton and his associates.
