Hardcover. Condizione: Good. 1st Edition. 421 pages. Octavo (8" x 5 1/4) bound in original publisher's red cloth wih gilt lettering to spine and cover. First edition. The Pit: A Story of Chicago (1903) by Frank Norris is a novel about capitalism, greed, and marriage, set in the Chicago Board of Trade's wheat pits, following speculator Curtis Jadwin and his wife Laura as his obsession with cornering the wheat market strains their relationship, ultimately leading to his financial ruin and a search for a new beginning. It's the second book in Norris's unfinished Epic of the Wheat trilogy, exploring the human cost of economic ambition and the power of nature. The story that was released serially in the Saturday Evening Post was titled The Pit: A Romance of Chicago and was significantly shorter than that of the published book. Many descriptive passages and much of the "Conclusion" were cut out by Norris and the magazine's editors to better appeal to the Post's readership. The version produced by Doubleday, Page is the full novel as Norris intended it to be read. Condition: Over opened at half title, corners bumped and rubbed, spine sunned, some toning to page and light rippling to head pages, some soiling to covers else good.

Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: New. Presents a novel interpretation of Schelling's philosophy by way of his reading and critique of Spinoza.Schelling and Spinoza reconstructs Schelling's reading of Spinoza's metaphysics to better understand the roles realism and idealism play in Schelling's work. Schelling initially praises Spinoza's monism but comes to criticize the lifelessness produced by Spinoza's dualistic account of the relation between thought and existence. By turning to Schelling's notion of the Absolute, author Benjamin Norris presents a novel reading of Schelling's early and middle philosophical endeavors as a kind of ideal-realism dependent on the hyphen that marks both the identity and the non-identity of realism and idealism. Through close analysis of Schelling's work, he convincingly argues that any contemporary return to Schelling must grapple with his critique of Spinoza. This critique calls into question the categories of immanence and transcendence that orient the current debate surrounding realism, antirealism, and idealism. Schelling and Spinoza is an important contribution to our understanding of both Schelling and Spinoza, as well as the viability of the frightening claim that only one thing truly exists.
