Hudson Ltd./ Booksellers / 116 New St., Birmingham". Top edge gilt. Offsetting on ffep/verso and forward, diminishingly, through half-title page and becoming more like small, irregular splotches of foxing, until p. 15, where it all virtually stops; similar pattern on rear flyleaf, working back toward front of book through p. 144. Tight binding (NO cracks); sharp corners (NO bumps or curls); NO spine fading; NO previous owner names. Clean text. From the Biographical Introduction: "Artemus Ward was one of the most distinctively American of American humourists. He belongs to the early Mark Twain period, and his humour, like that of Mark Twain in his young days, new and strange as it appeared, quickly caught fire over the two Continents. Artemus Ward's real name was Charles Farrar Browne, and he was born in Waterford, Oxford County, Maine, on the 26th of April, 1834. As is the case with most American families [sic] he could not boast an ancestry. . . When he was 14 years of age [sic] Ward was apprenticed as a compositor to the Skowhegan Clarion; next year he became a compositor on the Carpet Bag, a comic weekly published in Boston His first printed contribution appeared in the Carpet Bag. . . Being of a restless disposition, Ward left Boston and travelled as a journeyman printer over most of New York and Massachusetts. Arriving in Tiffin, Ohio. . . he was offered a position as a reporter on the Plaindealer, a daily paper in Cleveland. . . ." Brilliant condition for a book more than 95 years old.
