Unique édition de ce pamphlet qui semble n'avoir pour objet que des récriminations personnelles sur les pertes financières de son auteur. Fils d'un célèbre libraire de Lyon, Benoît-Joseph Duplain dit depuis 1787 "de Sainte-Albine" (1747-1794) abandonna très vite la succession de son père Benoît Duplain (mort en 1774) pour se lancer dans différentes affaires financières, toujours plus ou moins proches de l'agiotage pur et simple. Fondateur de plusieurs périodiques au début de la Révolution (dont les fameuses Lettres à M. le comte de B***), il commit l'erreur de se trouver mêlé, et de près encore, aux transactions des "Actions de la compagnie des Indes". Importante collection de l'hebdomadaire puis bihebdomadaire fondé et intégralement rédigé par Joseph-Benoît Duplain de Sainte-Albine afin de suivre « pas à pas le génie de la Révolution, en la prenant dès le 12 juillet 1789 » date de la première livraison pour l'amener au 21 mars 1790. Fils et successeur du libraire de Lyon Benoît Duplain, Joseph-Benoît Duplain de Sainte-Albine fut nommé en 1787 conseiller du Roi en la chancellerie près le parlement de Nancy ; il prit alors le nom de Duplain de Sainte-Albine. Enrichi par l'édition de l'Encyclopédie, il liquida son affaire à Lyon et s'installa en 1780 à Paris pour se livrer à l'agiotage qui entraîna rapidement sa ruine. « Victime toute sa vie de la tyrannie des grands, de la cupidité et de l'injustice des autres » Duplain lança sous le voile de l'anonyme un périodique en forme de correspondance, deux jours avant la Prise de la Bastille dans lequel il voue « à l'exécration publique les Ministres ainsi que les gens en place qui depuis le règne de Louis XV jusqu'à présent, ont ruiné l'État ». Néanmoins, ses lettres ne sont pas exclusivement politiques : on y trouve des réflexions sur la littérature, des causes jugées devant les tribunaux, des nouvelles littéraires et étrangères, des pièces fugitives en vers, des nouvelles de l'Assemblée Nationale, des anecdotes, des comptes rendus de livres. L'auteur y mêle ses propres réflexions, des souvenirs mais aussi des notes abondantes sur l'histoire de la monarchie, surtout sur les ministres.« Violentes dénonciations de l'administration d'Ancien Régime, des "vizirs" et des "vampires", de l'Aristocratie. Soupçonné de royalisme et impliqué dans la prétendue "conspiration du Luxembourg", Duplain fut arrêté en avril 1794 et condamné à mort par le Tribunal révolutionnaire.
