C'est la guerre d'Indépendance de François II Rákóczi (1703-1711). Celui ci renouant les liens traditionnels des Mécontents hongrois avec Versailles obtint le versement de subsides et l'envoi d'une mission militaire. Le témoignage d'un membre de cette mission militaire, l'ingénieur Louis Le Maire, est inédit en langue française(il a déjà été traduit en hongrois). Il relate trois années de guerre contre les Impériaux (1705-1708). L'auteur, disciple de Vauban, ne s'intéresse pas seulement aux combats, mais à la vie politique et aux réactions du peuple hongrois. La guerre se termina en effet en 1711 par un compromis avec la Cour de Vienne, un an après le retour de Le Maire, qui poursuivit en France une brillante carrière d'ingénieur militaire.
