In dieser weitgehend von Deutschen verlassenen Region entstand kurzzeitig eine ,judische Republik" mit eigener Selbstverwaltung und Jiddisch als Alltagssprache. Der von Jakob Egit initiierte ,Jiddische Jischuv" sollte eine Alternative zum zionistischen Projekt in Palastina bieten. Trotz anfanglicher Unterstutzung durch die kommunistische Staatsmacht Polens war das Projekt, das kulturelle, politische und wirtschaftliche Autonomie fur Juden anstrebte, sehr erfolgreich, scheiterte jedoch an pogromartigen antisemitischen Ausschreitungen, der kommunistischen Gleichschaltung, dem aufgeladenen polnischen Nationalismus und einer antisemitischen Welle, die von Stalin initiiert wurde. Das Buch beleuchtet auch die antisemitische Stimmung in Polen vor dem Krieg sowie die Haltung der polnischen katholischen Bevolkerung zu ihren judischen Nachbarn wahrend des Krieges. Die Gleichgultigkeit der polnischen Bevolkerung gegenuber dem von deutschen Besatzern organisierten Massenmord an Juden war vorherrschend. Aktive Mittaterschaft, besonders in landlichen Gebieten, und Denunziantentum in Stadten waren weit verbreitet. Viele polnische Judenretter lebten in standiger Gefahr, von ihren Nachbarn an die deutschen Besatzer ausgeliefert zu werden, was fur sie und ihre Retter den sicheren Tod bedeutete.
