Med utställningarna 'Från Seinens strand' och 'Opponenternas utställning' 1885 fick svensk publik kontakt med parisersvenskarnas blonda maleri. Modern konst blev ett svenskt begrepp. Richard Bergh, Per Hasselberg, Ernst Josephson, Nils Kreuger, Carl Larsson, Bruno Liljefors, Karl Nordström, Georg Pauli och Anders Zorn var huvudmännen bakom dessa händelser. Bland dessa är Richard Bergh en av de mest fängslande konstnärsgestalterna. Den 29 januari 1979 är det sextio ar sedan han lämnade sin framskjutna position i nordiskt kulturliv. Han hann göra sig uppskattad som konstnär, författare, kulturpolitiker och chef för Nationalmuseum. Denna bok kastar nytt ljus över konstnärens liv och verksamhet genom tillgången till ett okänt, rikhaltigt material. Hans nära relationer till Ellen Key belyses liksom målarstunderna med prins Eugen i Florens och kontakterna med Per Hallström och Verner von Heidenstam i samband med unionskrisen och Almqvistrenässansen. Som konstnär och kulturpolitiker möter vi honom i front mot Konstakademin. Solidaritetsidéernas betydelse för konsten utvecklade han under mottot konsten åt folket. I tävlingarna för Vigselrummet i Stockholms nya rådhus kämpade han som jurymedlem i Eva Bonniers Donationsnämnd för den moderna konsten och Isaac Grünewald. Den omfattande verksamheten i Konstnärsförbundets målarskolor genomfördes med hans handlingskraftiga insatser. Många nya detaljer och synpunkter förmedlas med denna breda skildring av händelser kring sekelskiftet, då Richard Bergh var en av våra främsta kulturpersonligheter".
