Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good Minus. 1st Edition. Stated First Edition. This book came from the library of the former Assistant Secretary of War and High Commissioner Postwar Germany, John J. McCloy. Perhaps Charles McClumpha lent it to him. The book is signed and inscribed by the author on the first front end paper. The inscription reads 'To Charles McClumpha cordially Masi Salvadori, Northampton, Mass., May, 1959.' The book is in nice condition. You can see the gray covers in the photos. There very clean. There is one little spot of color loss off the top edge of the rear cover. There is some crinkling at the spine ends and a small crease just adjacent on the front cover off the top edge. There are a few little dents at the top edge of the rear cover and bottom edge of the front cover. The corners are free of rubbing. The page edges look good, with just a very small pen jag in the middle one, not impacting the pages. The book is very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers. The last 85 pages or so have a light crease off their top corners. A number of early pages have a little crease off their top corner. The pages look very clean. Scrolling through, I'm not finding any soiling. There are no markings. No attachments. And with the exception of the author's signed inscription, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. There were two newspaper reviews of the book left loose between the last page of the index and the blank rear end paper. They have created shadows of themselves on both pages. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. It has a couple of small edge tears, a little wear at the spine ends and off the top edge of the rear cover. There are several scratches on the rear cover. The flaps are in solid shape. There are a couple of small scratches just off the top edge of the front flap. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. It will be fitted with a protective cover after the photos are scanned. 'Massimo Salvadori, or Max William Salvadori Paleotti was a British-Italian historian and anti-Fascist. He was educated at the University of Geneva and the University of Rome. He was involved in the anti-Fascist movement in Italy before World War II. Imprisoned from 1931-32 as a result of his political activities, Salvadori fled Italy for Switzerland. In 1943 he joined the British army and after participating in landings at Salerno and Anzio, parachuted into Italy to organize resistance. As agent of the British Special Operations Executive, Salvadori played a central role in providing weapons supplies for partisan formations and in pushing the Action Party to cooperate with the Italian Monarchy after the "svolta di Salerno" in (1944). For this service, he was awarded the Military Cross and Distinguished Service Order. He served on the faculty of Smith College from 1945 until his retirement in 1973, with two notable breaks: in 1948-49 he was director of the Division of Political Science of UNESCO in France and in 1952 he worked as a political analyst for the Information Service of the Secretariat of NATO.' From the Introduction: 'It is time that a detached and reasonable appraisal of the whole system of capitalism should be presented by a competent scholar, preferably not of American origin, for general consideration. The author's "careful and statistically documented description of what has actually happened is the best definition which can be made. Even if we recognize as Professor Salvadori does, the wretchedness in the meanness, the failures and instabilities of American life, it is still true that in a half-century which has displaced many systems, sometimes with unparalleled cruelty and horror, the American liberal democracy has peacefully changed itself, has vastly increased the well-being of Americans, has moved steadily toward a greater measure of social justice, and has found it unnecessary to conquer other countries in the process.'. Inscribed by Author(s).…

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Good. No Jacket. Originally published in 1932, this is a later printing from December, 1948. This book revolutionized how economists, policymakers, and legal theorists understood the American corporate economy, arguing that the rise of large, manager-controlled corporations had effectively separated ownership from control, diminishing the power of shareholders and challenging classical free-market assumptions. This insight laid the groundwork for modern corporate governance theory, securities regulation, and antitrust policy, making it one of the foundational texts in both corporate law and institutional economics. The book is hardcover, missing dust jacket. The book condition is Good. Overall, the text is clean, unmarked and attractive, but there is cosmetic wear to cover and some ex-library features (from Marlboro College in VT, which closed in 2020). List of ex-library features: code in ink on bottom of spine, shadow of sticker on top of front cover, nice bookplate on front pastedown, embossed library stamp on title page, date due slip and pouch on back flyleaf and pastedown. The text is notably tanned around edges. Hinges firm. Binding sound, but loosened with age, with widening in gutters on title page (with small rip on bottom of gutter) and pages 78-79 with mesh visible. Hardcover board corners turned in and exposed, with fabric fraying. Fabric on top and bottom of spine worn, ripped and chipping. Gilted text on boards heavily rubbed. A few small white splotches on fabric. Fabric rubbed and fraying in spots along spine joints.…
