Full page cover of JUDGE magazine for July 1, 1893 titled "Give Some Other State a Chance. Why Should Ohio Monopolize the Presidency?" featuring a wonderful color lithograph depicting Senator Charles W. Fairbanks straddling "Indiana" on the right and the empty "Presidential Chair" on the left." Illustration by Gillam, lithographed at Sackett & Wilheims Litho & Printing. Bernhard Gillam (1856 1896) was an English-born American political cartoonist. Gillam worked as a copyist in a lawyer's office, but switched to the study of engraving, and later turned to cartooning. His work appeared in Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper, Harper's Weekly, where he worked with Thomas Nast during James A. Garfield's campaign of 1880, and Puck magazine where he came under the influence of Joseph Keppler. Gillam also produced work for Judge, a magazine of which he became director-in-chief in 1886. William Steele Holman (1822 1897) was a lawyer, judge and politician from Dearborn County, Indiana. He was a member of the Democratic Party who served multiple terms as a U.S. Representative betweem 1859 and 1897. He is known for originating the Holman Rule, allowing amendments to appropriations bills to cut a specific program or federal employee salary.

Full page cover of JUDGE magazine for December 15, 1888 titled THE BIG 4 SPLIT depicting a brawl between 4 NY gents with walking sticks -- Frank Hiscock, Warner Miller, Chauncey Depew and Thomas C. Platt. In the background a sign reads "Republican Harmony Band. Notice: We Won't Play Anymore!" as musician flee the building carrying instruments labelled "N.Y. Press" and "Tribune Wind." The Split in the Republican Convention those four NY delegates resulted in William B. Allison not receiving the nomination, which eventually went to Benjamin Harrison. Illustration by Gillam.
