These essays were only recently recovered from the archives of the University of Padua by Louis Perrone of Fairfield University. Prof. Berrone translated and edited the essays, and provides a detailed introduction showing the particular circumstances of Joyce's life during the time he wrote these essays, and reveals how many of the ideas in these two Paduan essays were an essential part of Joyce's critical apparatus, influencing his work in both fiction and nonfiction.
