Hardcover. Condizione: Good. No Jacket. First Edition. Blue cloth with red titles soiled and marked, corners bumped and quite rubbed. Solid reading copy, not pretty outside but all there and priced accordingly. Previous owner's name printed on upside-down book plate on front paste down. 80 pp text is tight and bright w/two 1/2" closed tears at foot of two pages. Undated, circa 1949. Internals are very good, profusely illustrated with more than 100 black & white photographs taken at California racetracks that illustrate the owning, breeding and competing of thoroughbreds in racings' heyday. The suits, the dresses, the hats, or the guys in regular or working togs standing in the infield. All were welcome and many went. Really takes you back.

Ghosting from partially erased number at head of frt paste down, else the 96pp, un-paginated leaves are tight, crisp, unmarked and filled with b/w photos throughout. Original dust wrapper has small repaired chips at spine ends and a light wrinkle at upper tip. Author's expansive collection of photographs here assists him in telling in photos & text the complete story of Thoroughbred breeding and racing. Reproductions of early paintings and prints, plus contemporary photos, show not only the mature TB but also the whole life story of these magnificent animals. Cover features a precious foal laying in the grass with dreams of the turf in his head. No names, tears or soil, just a touch of color loss at upper cover tip and one photo of some weanlings missing mom on page 8 that had two small areas that adhered to the opposing page covering some of the text but one can still follow the story printed opposite. Explains in words and photos the life story of a foal to the winner's circle via 1940s/1950s era pix and ends with blurbs on Citation, Bull Lea, Heliopolis and Alibhai.
