Besnier examines the roots of Norman law, highlighting its synthesis of Scandinavian, Frankish, and Roman legal traditions. He discusses how these influences shaped the legal system during the reigns of the Norman dukes and kings. The book explores the role of Norman legal institutions, such as the Échiquier de Normandie (Exchequer of Normandy), in shaping and codifying customary practices.
