Aggiungi al carrelloFirst Edition. Octavo. . ix(xvii), (1-2) 304 pages. Illustrated. Originally published serially, President Theodore Roosevelt had read Chapter III and wrote Mrs. Van Vorst. (pages vii-ix), She had already been influenced by Mary E, Wilkins Freeman's work The Portion of Labor. Bessie and her sister-in-law, Marie, came from a prominent New York family and both became interested in the plight of women laborers. They decided to take on aliases and work in the factory jobs open to women. While a man might make a little more than a dollar a day, women were paid less. When Marie began looking for lodging in Pittsburgh in 1902, she found room and board for $3.50 a week but her salary for a six day weeks was $4.10 so she was left with 60 cents. She speaks of how difficult the labor was and how her hands were becoming rough and very painful. This work is one of the most important books on the condition of women in labor at the period before labor unions obtained some equality. There was a paperback reprint issued in 1973.A very nice near fine copy bound in blue cloth lettered in gilt, spine lettering gilt, endpapers are toned, internally clean, early previous owner's name.…
