Reliant les monastères, les villages et les groupes ethniques les plus isolés, la Chamagudao se développa à partir du Xe siècle pour satisfaire un échange commercial historique entre le puissant empire chinois et le peuple tibétain. L'armée chinoise avait besoin des chevaux tibétains, réputés pour leur robustesse et leur pied sûr, afin de repousser les envahisseurs mongols venus du nord, tandis que les Tibétains ne pouvaient plus se passer de thé : introduit au Tibet au vile siècle, le thé était devenu un produit de première nécessité pour la population, qui le consomme mélangé à du sel et à du beurre de yack. L'échange du thé contre des chevaux connut son apogée au XIIIe siècle, la Chine troquait alors des millions de kilos de thé contre quelque 25000 chevaux par an, mais le commerce se poursuivit le long de la Chamagudao jusqu'en 1950, grâce à l'abnégation des porteurs de thé qui convoyaient, au péril de leur vie, les briques de thé noir à dos d'homme, de yack ou de mulet jusqu'à Lhassa. Aujourd'hui, la Chamagudao disparaît sous un réseau de routes goudronnées sillonnées par les voitures et les camions et, alors que la culture chinoise absorbe peu à peu les traditions tibétaines, la route du Thé et des Chevaux apparaît comme la relique d'un temps révolu. Hormis les monastères qui la jalonnaient, il n'existera bientôt plus aucun témoignage de cette route commerciale autrefois si importante. Les besoins des Chinois en chevaux disparurent au XVIIIe siècle, mais les Tibétains ont aujourd'hui un nouveau produit à leur offrir : un champignon parasite, qui se nourrit de la larve d'une chenille et ne pousse que sur le plateau tibétain, à plus de 3000 m d'altitude.
