Henry Ernest Sigerist spezialisierte sich auf Medizingeschichte und die Organisation des Gesundheitswesens. 1925-1932 hielt er einen Lehrstuhl für Medizingeschichte in Leipzig und 1932-1947 an der Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore (USA). 1947-1957 arbeitete Sigerist in Pura als externer Mitarbeiter der Yale University. Der bedeutende Medizinhistoriker betonte in seinem Werk die sozialen und ökonomischen Aspekte der Medizin. Sigerist war Mitglied und zum Teil Präsident vieler wissenschaftlicher Gesellschaften und erhielt zahlreiche Ehrungen» (HLS).
