First edition. xxi, 330pp., frontispiece, illustrations of an old Seal on the title-page, 5 maps, 4 coloured plates and 3 black and white plates. This is an account of the four cavalry regiments in the British Army that have borne the number Nineteen. The first was raised in Ireland, in 1759, and disbanded in 1821. The second regiment was raised in 1779, and disbanded in 1783. The third was raised as the 23rd Light Dragoons in 1781, and renumbered in 1783. The fourth regiment was originally raised by the East India Company on the outbreak of the Mutiny of the Bengal Army, and received the number nineteen on the transfer of its services to the Crown. The book is bound in the original blue cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with some shelf wear to the boards. The spine is faded and the spine ends are lightly bumped. The contents are tight and clean with no inscription.

Binding has moderate wear, is rubbed and lightly scuffed. The top edge of front board and spine are sunned. Corners are bumped. Endpapers are foxed. Prior owner's bookplate on front pastedown. "Julia Henty". Embossed bookseller imprint on upper right corner of front flyleaf. Text is toned, with occasional foxing. The binding is now housed in a modern removable clear mylar jacket.Collates complete with 14 illustrations, including a the frontis and a device on the title pages. Four of the illustrations are in color. The bulk of the action seems to be in France and India, although the regiment was also active in North American during the Revolutionary War, specifically near the Canadian frontier.
