Het verhaal van de Universiteitsbibliotheek van Amsterdam begint bij de parochiebibliotheek in de Nieuwe Kerk aan de Dam (ca. 1400- 1632). Deze laatmiddeleeuwse boekencollectie, waarvan nog 85 procent aanwezig is bij de Bijzondere Collecties van de UvA, was niet alleen bedoeld voor de geestelijkheid en de docenten van de Latijnse school. Ook geleerde burgers maakten er gebruik van. Dit rijk geïllustreerde boek gaat over het ontstaan, de groei en de functie van deze vroegste voorloper van de UB. Verteld wordt over de bibliotheekruimten in de Nieuwe Kerk en hun inrichting, over het bestuur en beheer van de collectie van vóór en na de Alteratie in 1578, over schenkingen en aankopen. Veel aandacht is er voor de samenstelling en de aard van het boekenbezit, de eerste gedrukte catalogi en typografische en kunsthistorische aspecten van de boeken. De librije bevond zich in het krachtenveld van stad, kerk en Latijnse school. Om de plaats en de rol van de bibliotheek goed te kunnen beoordelen, wordt ook gekeken naar stadsbibliotheken elders in de Noordelijke Nederlanden. Daardoor levert het verhaal tevens een bijdrage aan de geschiedenis van stad en land en de intellectuele ontwikkelingen in de late middeleeuwen en de vroegmoderne tijd.
