In America the Goethe Bi~Centennial Foundation is sponsoring a new edition of Goethe's works, and a Goethe Festival is being held in Aspen, Colorado. One of New Directions' contributions to the Goethe celebration is this volume~an intimate portrait of Goethe the man and the world he lived in. Goethe was a fabulous character. In Goethe's World, Berthold Biermann, journalist and lifelong student of Goethe, has brought together significant selections from the great man's own autobiographical writings, records of conversations left by people who knew him, and excerpts from letters and diaries of the period.
