Soft cover. Condizione: New. First published in the Odin in 1948 and translated for the first time here into English by Bikram Das, Gopinath Mohanty's Harijan is one of the most original and radical Indian novels of the twentieth century. It brings to vivid life The story of a group of mehentars living in a slum. Cleaning latrines with their bare hands is the only work that they can hope to find as their caste excluded them from every other occupation. The leader of this group is the middle-aged and foul-mouthed jema who starts her day by gulping down a potful of liquor and smoking pinkas in order to deal with the stench of the excreta. One day, jema comes down with a fever and is unable to go to work. Fourteen-year-old puni offers to take her mothers place. The next morning puni wakes up early, bathes, puts on a clean sari, and dabs some cheap perfume on her skin. Stepping out of the hut excitedly, she picks up basket and broom. When she arrives at the first latrine, the Stink hits her with the force of a hammer blow. She drops her basket and broom, turns around, and is trying to run away, when her friends stop her. 'This is what you will have to do every day for the rest of your life! It is your fate!' Avinash Babu lives in a palatial house next to the slum. He is planning to evict the mehentars in order to develop the slum into a residential colony. One night, a fire breaks out and the entire slum is burned to the ground. The mehentars leave the slum carrying their remaining possessions on their backs. They have nowhere to go but they are past all worriesthey know that no matter where they go, they will still be cleaning excrement, for they are Harijans.…

Hardcover. Condizione: New. 1st Edition. Matira Manisha ('The Man of the Soil') is one of those uncommon artistic creations which prove that good art does not have to be convoluted or obscure. The novel'senduringappeal lies in its very starkness. It is the story of an Odia peasant family whose simple joys and sorrows are bound up with the soil. Baraju Padhan, who becomes the head of the family after the death of his father, Shaama Padhan, inherits his humanism and is committed to the traditions and ideals of joint family existence, but his younger brother, Chhakadi, instigated by his wife Netramani, is determined to split up the home. However, Baraju's nobleness of character shows Chhakadi the error of his ways and the family is reunited. The bookis remarkable not only for its depiction of enduring human values but also for its realistic portrayal of the culture of rural Odisha. The language of the novel is a bold attempt at capturing the idiom of the people whose life it presents. Matira Manisha lies close to the hearts of Odia society and has been made into an award-winning Odia film by Mrinal Sen.…

Hardcover. Condizione: New. The world is languishing in the grip of violence, unrest and distrust. The human race is in distress to reach solution for its survival. At Puri, the religious heartland of the erstwhile Kalinga Empire, still exists a cult over thousands of years that preaches humanitarian principles and amity amongst all. Equality, fraternity, justice and benevolence is the theme of the cult. The sculpture of the deities itself represents the magnanimity and wisdom imbedded in the cult. It is the cult of Lord Jagannath, for ages referred to as 'Purusottam' (meaning the best of mankind) i.e., God universified. The Orissan life has been intermingled with this cult for centuries. Lord Jagannath is revered as the omnipresent ruler, saviour and dejure Emperor of their life, property and destiny. The erstwhile ruler of Kalinga, the Gajapati King-Emperor, is regarded as His representative in real life (chalanti pratima) and considered His first sevak or servant. It is, therefore, unique and treats all human beings as equal while God is the sovereign.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - History textbooks often view the Indian Independence Movement through a singular, centralized lens-a story of absolute unanimity and non-violence. But the true strength of the freedom struggle lay in its vibrant debates, differing strategies, and multiple visions for India's future. Pandit Nilakantha and Netaji Subhas: On the National Battlefront serves as an extraordinary historical record of this uncompromising, passionate nationalism. Written by Dr. Bikram Das, who witnessed these monumental events firsthand as a young member of the Forward Bloc in the late 1930s and early 1940s, this book provides an authentic and intimate perspective on two of India's greatest patriots. As the younger son of Pandit Nilakantha, Dr. Das was uniquely positioned to observe the 'giants' of the era from close range. Inside this compelling history, you will discover: - - An Untold Connection: Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose's deep, often overlooked ties to his birthplace, Cuttack, and the intellectual ideology of Odisha that shaped his revolutionary spirit. - - Rare, Intimate Portraits: A side of Netaji rarely captured in mainstream history-the leader joking on a trip to Puri, confessing political regrets on a moonlit beach, and effortlessly commanding silence from a stampeding crowd. - - The Legislative Battlefront: The dramatic account of the 1936 Parliamentary Adjournment Motion. Read how Pandit Nilakantha (the 'Lion of Odisha') bravely defied the British Empire's decree to exile Subhas Bose, passing the motion 62-59 in the Delhi Central Assembly. - - The Appendix: An insightful summary and narrative of the full historic 1936 Delhi Assembly debates regarding Netaji's restriction and the challenges to colonial authority. Beautifully translated into English, this volume honors the men who refused to yield to political temptations and chose instead the bitter, honorable path of revolution. Perfect for history buffs, scholars, and anyone looking to understand the complex, multi-layered truth of India's journey to independence.…
