The record of my conversations with private individuals in Italy filled many note-books, and extracts from the voluminous literature on the subject have filled still more. Finally, the practical nexus between the fortunes of the Holy See and the Italian Church has been made abundantly clear by the character of the Lateran agreements of 1929: Piux XI insisted that the Treaty settling the political dispute between Italy andthe Papacy should be accompanied by a Concordat regulating the position of the Catholic Church in Italy, and even claimed that the two instruments were indissolubly connected. The overwhelming weight of these facts convinced me,therefore,that any attempted divorce between Mussolini's relations with the Holy See and Mussolini's relations with the Italian Church would be impossible in practice; hence my decision to deal with both of them pari passu and to take as the focal point of this work the settlement of 1929 in its political as well as its religious aspects.'
