Edwin, in partnership with his cousin, formed Binney & Smith, which later became Crayola, a company which in 1903 produced the first box of "Crayola" crayons, a name coined by his wife Alice, joining the French word "craie," (meaning chalk or stick of color), and "ola," (from oleaginous or oily).
