Thornton Bishop, the volume reflects the professional standards and pedagogical methods used in commercial studios and art schools during the late 1940s and early 1950s. Illustrated throughout with hundreds of black-and-white reproductions and select color plates, the book documents period approaches to figure drawing, composition, visual storytelling, and applied design. Contributions by more than 130 working artists - many active in magazine illustration, advertising, and newspaper syndication - offer a wide-ranging visual record of American commercial art at mid-century. Particularly notable is the breadth of subject matter, which moves fluidly from foundational freehand drawing and design theory to specialized applications such as fashion illustration, cartooning for advertising, and illustrative techniques for print media. As such, the volume functions both as a technical manual and as a historical reference for scholars of graphic design, illustration, and visual communication. This copy includes laid-in vintage school ephemera, reinforcing its original instructional context and adding a tangible layer of provenance related to art education and studio use. Despite minor condition issues noted separately, the book remains a visually rich and historically important reference, well suited to collectors, designers, and institutional libraries with an interest in mid-century commercial art practice. Name (Vaughen) written on perimeter spine, common for student-issued, institutional copies. One image cut out (approx. 1.5" x 1.5") and a small, closed tear to top edge of page found (about 1.5".) Gene Byrnes (1889-1967) was a prominent American cartoonist and illustrator best known for the long-running syndicated comic strip Reg'lar Fellers. In addition to his newspaper work, Byrnes was deeply involved in art education, producing instructional films and editorial projects aimed at professional and aspiring artists. His curatorial role in Commercial Art reflects his commitment to bridging fine-art training with practical, real-world illustration and design.
