BONCHAMPS 1760-1793 et l'insurrection vendéenne d'après les documents originaux Par René BLACHEZ EDITIONS DU CHOLETAIS, 1985 FORMAT IN-8, broche, 362 PAGES CARTES IN-TEXTE Charles Melchior Artus, Marquis de BONCHAMPS, 1760-1793, est une des grandes figures de la Guerre de Ve…ndée. Issu d'une vieille famille de noblesse militaire de la région des Mauges. Lui-même s'engagea à 16 ans comme cades gentilhomme au régiment d'Aquitaine. En 1782 il fut envoyé en Inde avec un bataillon de son régiment. Revenu en garnison en France, il était encore simple capitaine en 1789, malgré une bonne instruction, des manières policées, le goût de l'étude et de la musique, lorsqu'il se maria avec Marie Renée de SCEPEAUX, nièce du Comte d'AUTICHAMP. Modéré, de BONCHAMPS ne fut pas opposé aux débuts de la Révolution et se porta même acquéreur des biens d'Église tout en refusant d'émigrer. Resté cependant profondément royaliste, il gagna Paris dans l'été 1792 dans l'espoir, déçu, de prendre part à la défense du Trone. Pourtant ce n'est pas de gaieté de chur qu'il consentit à suivre la petite troupe d'insurgés qui se présenta le 13 mars 1793 à son domicile de La Baronnière. Professionnel des armes, BONCHAMPS redoutait , comme d'autres anciens officiers nobles, l'échec d'une révolte populaire et paysanne. Pour donner plus de sérieux à l'insurrection il créa deux compagnies de chasseurs, soldés et équipés à ses frais. Formés de « Bretons » accourus de l'autre côté de la Loire, elles furent parmi les rares unités permanentes de l'Armée Catholique. En mai 1793, BONCHAMPS se porta avec CATHELINEAU et LA ROCHEJAQUELEIN sur Thouars qui fut prise le 5. N'ayant pu entraîner ses compagnons vers Saumur, il contribua à la victoire de Fontenay, le 25 mai, ou il eut l'épaule fracassée. Il aurait aimé étendre le soulèvement vendéen à la Bretagne, aussi se rallia-t'il sans peine à l'idée du siège de Nantes. C'est là qu'il reprit sa place à l'armée, mais une seconde blessure, à Martigné en Briand en juillet, l'éloigna à nouveau. Encore mal remis, il participa cependant à la victoire de Torfou le 19 septembre, mais un mois plus tard, il devait être cette fois blessé mortellement devant Cholet. Transporté mourant à Saint Florent le Vieil ou les Vendéens s'étaient précipités pour traverser la Loire, BONCHAMPS, Général, chef de la division des bords de Loire, ordonna de libérer près de 5000 prisonniers « Bleus » près d'être massacrés par ses troupes: « Grâce aux prisonniers ! »: la clémence de BONCHAMPS sera magnifié par le sculpteur DAVID D'ANGERS dont le père était parmi les soldats Républicains sauvés in extremis par la volonté de BONCHAMPS agonisant. BONCHAMPS n'avait pas survécu à son geste généreux, il était mort immédiatement après son transfert sur la rive droite du fleuve, à la Meilleraye. C'était le 8 octobre 1793. « La perte de BONCHAMPS vaut une victoire pour nous, écrivaient, au lendemain de sa mort, les Représentants en mission, car il est, de tous les chefs de brigands, celui en qui ils avaient le plus de confiance, qu'ils aimaient le mieux, et qu'ils suivaient le plus volontiers ». Les épisodes de la lutte montrent que cette appréciation n'a rien d'exagéré. Le concours de la division BONCHAMPS signale toutes les grandes victoires de « Blancs »; son absence se remarque dans la plupart des graves défaites. BONCHAMPS et ses hommes sont à Beaupreau, Thouars, la seconde bataille de Fontenay, Saumur, Chatillon, Chantonnay, Torfou, ou les « Brigands » triomphent; il ne prennent part ni à la première attaque de Fontenay, ni aux combats du Bois aux Chèvres, ni aux deux batailles de Luçon, ou les insurgés sont vaincus. BONCHAMPS n'est pas seulement un tacticien heureux; seul, parmi ses compagnons d'armes qui ne songent guère qu'à se battre au jour le jour, il a un but précis, des plans de camp.
