POOR CONDITION. Presumed first edition (not stated but per OCLC citations). [frontis], 1-202 pages. Hardcover: H 17.5cm x L 11.75cm. Contemporary reddish-brown cloth; black decoration and gilt lettering to front board; rubbing/staining to boards with wear along edges particularly at corners; spine's surface cloth perished with underlying paper back-strip exposed and quires visible at ends all contributing to front and rear joints being compromised. Dark top margin stains to early leaves; varied soiling and stains to interior leaves. Front board and initial leaves inclusive to frontispiece are shaken as is rear hinge; two interior quires slightly pulled. Needs to be re-backed at a minimum and sold as is. Book now presented in a trimmed clear Dura-Lar (polyester film) sheet forming a dj which aids in securing boards and modestly enhances shelf presence. Scarce biography of Reverend Constantine Blackmon Sanders, aka The Sleeping Preacher, who was ordained as a minister in 1862 and resided for most of his life in Madison County and Jackson County, Alabama save for a few years in the 1880s-1890s when he lived in Red River County, Texas. Upon being stricken with typhoid fever in 1854 at the age of 23, Sanders started experiencing involuntary trances, i.e. sleeping spells, during which a secondary personality named X+Y=Z would emerge offering startlingly accurate psychic predictions. In 1876 Sanders asked Reverend George Washington Mitchell, pastor of Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Athens, Alabama, to document his mysterious "sleeping" clairvoyance and, accordingly, Reverend Mitchell found some sixty-nine living witnesses mostly from north Alabama and south Tennessee whose comments were compiled for this book. OCLC does not record any earlier editions than this 1876 W.C. Smith imprint but does note a second 1876 edition apparently distinguished by having both Roman and Arabic pagination (although with same page count overall) whereas this copy has Arabic pagination only. W.C. Smith published a third edition (also 202 pages total) in 1877 but the book was not reprinted again until 1981.
