The 1973 FIDE World Chess Championship Interzonals m…arked a historic change in the qualification cycle, splitting the Interzonal stage into two separate 18-player round-robin tournaments for the first time. This system allowed more regional qualifiers a chance to advance, with the top three finishers from each venue securing a spot in the 1974 Candidates Matches to find a challenger for reigning champion Bobby Fischer. Held at the Dzerzhinsky House of Culture in Leningrad, Soviet Union, this tournament was thoroughly dominated by two powerhouse Soviet Grandmasters. Viktor Korchnoi and Anatoly Karpov jointly took 1st-2nd place with dominant scores of 13½/17. Korchnoi achieved this with 11 wins, 5 draws, and 1 loss, while a rising Karpov went undefeated with 10 wins and 7 draws. Robert Byrne of the United States claimed the 3rd and final qualification spot with 12½/17, leading the non-Soviet contingent. Jan Smejkal of Czechoslovakia finished just outside of qualification with 11 points, seeing his chances dashed after losing a favorable position to Karpov in the penultimate round. Former World Champion Mikhail Tal suffered a disappointing performance, finishing well down the field with 8½ points. The monumental games and tournament drama of this cycle were famously captured in the classic 1974 tournament book World Championship Interzonals: Leningrad-Petropolis, 1973, co-authored by Robert Wade, Les Blackstock, and Alexander Kotov. Condition: Tape stains to cover and pastedowns else very good in a near fine jacket.
