Z : 16,5 x 24 cm, 6 ½ x 9 ½ in, 376 pages, 286 illustrations - What is it that gives places their individual qualities and defines the life of a city? Architects and urbanists are accustomed to describing and creating the organizational structures, the layouts and physical attributes of our cities. But what are the relations between the design of a cityits formand the life engendered by that form? Responding to this question is the inspiration for In the Life of Cities. Contributors from a wide range of fields address the inseparability of urban life and urban form. Portfolios of contemporary photography assert the layered realities of urban life today. Featured cities: Baku, Bucharest, Buenos Aires, Cairo, Caracas, Chicago, Dakar, Detroit, Hong Kong, Houston, Jakarta , Johannesburg, London, Moscow, Mumbai, Paris, Quito, São Paulo, St. Petersburg, Tel Aviv, Tirana, Tokyo, and Toronto.

Aggiungi al carrelloSoftcover. English. Brownish gray illustrated wraps. 272 pp. Color and bw illustrations. A collection of essays that explores the 19th-century architectural history of cities in the former Habsburg region. These include Budapest, Prague, Vienna, Zagreb, L'viv, Krakow, and Timisoara, among others. "As administrative hubs of empire, they had translocal, even transnational, significance. To build in them, therefore, was not only to shape spaces of modern urban life but also to engage the history of their imbricated fabric; it was to enter into debate with and question the authority of the forces that had formed them. This book proposes that it was in the lived cities of the region that the conflicting aspirations of empire and people and the intersecting of urban modernization and national autonomy gave shape to a modern architectural culture, one that was deeply rooted in place and in a conception of the great city as a protagonist in the making of history."

Aggiungi al carrelloNear Fine in publishers cloth in like dustjacket. 264pp. Illustrated. 1st edition. A fundamental tenet of the historiography of modern architecture holds that cubism forged a vital link between avant-garde practices in early twentieth-century painting and architecture. This collection of essays, commissioned by the Canadian Centre for Architecture, takes a close look at that widely accepted but little scrutinized belief. In the first historically focused examination of the issue, the volume returns to the original site of cubist art in pre-World War I Europe and proceeds to examine the historical, theoretical, and socio-political relationships between avant-garde practices in painting, architecture, and other cultural forms, including poetry, landscape, and the decorative arts. The essays look at works produced in France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Czechoslovakia during the early decades of the twentieth century.Together, the essays show that although there were many points of intersection -- historical, metaphorical, theoretical, and ideological -- between cubism and architecture, there was no simple, direct link between them. Most often the connections between cubist painting and modern architecture were construed analogically, by reference to shared formal qualities such as fragmentation, spatial ambiguity, transparency, and multiplicity; or to techniques used in other media such as film, poetry, and photomontage. Cubist space itself remained two-dimensional; with the exception of Le Cobusiers work, it was never translated into the three dimensions of architecture. Cubism's significance for architecture also remained two-dimensional -- a method of representing modern spatial experience through the ordering impulses of art.Copublished with the Canadian Centre for Architecture/CentreCanadien d'Architecture ISBN 0262024225.
