A biographical novel in which Nellie Blessing-Eyster (1836-1922), an American journalist and social reformer, recounts her experiences in helping to educate a young Chinese boy, Tong Sing Wing, in San Francisco. Quoted from Baird and Greenwood bibliography, No. 274: "The author published a sketch about 1889 of her experiences in educating a 10-year-old Chinese boy in San Francisco. She received a letter from the poet, John Greenleaf Whittier, expressing the hope that she might be able to watch the development of this young boy. Thus the novel deals in fictional form with the whole experience. The boy later became a high mandarin in China. This is a carefully detailed study of Chinese life and education in San Francisco at the end of the 19th century.".
