Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. "Everyone who cares much for the largest-brained Englishwoman who has written will read this biography with interest. For popular purposes, the book is indeed all that can be desired" - Eric Robertson, The Academy (1883) "No greater writing woman than Miss Blind has passed away since the death of George EliotIn certain important points she was superior to George Eliot" -Theodore Watts-Duncan, The Athenaeum (1896) The dinner was an extremely pleasant one, but when it was over, the guest could not help expressing his regret that George Eliot himself should not have been present. "Here he is," said Lewes, introducing the quiet, low-spoken lady who had presided at table With all her mental activity she yet led an intensely emotional life, a life which must have held hidden trials for her, as in those days she was known by her friends "to weep bucketfuls of tears" This is the first full-length biography of George Eliot, published just three years after her death, by a freethinking German-Jewish emigre and proto-feminist: the first to tackle the Lewes relationship, the marriage to John Cross, and the break with religious orthodoxy. It firmly established Eliot as the deeply autobiographical novelist we now know her to be. This is the first full-length biography of George Eliot, published just three years after her death, by a freethinking German-Jewish emigre and proto-feminist. Hard Cover. Condizione: Good. No Jacket. Reissue. Reissue. Edges rubbed, spine slightly toned. Portions of publisher's slipcase included. 1900 Hard Cover. xlii, 289 pp. Cream leather spine, brown leather boards and spine label, gilt titles and decorations, top edge gilt, illustrated endpapers. Woodcut frontispiece. A collection of verse translations by Edward Fitzgerald and E.H. Whinfield, together with the prose version of Justin McCarthy, edited with an introduction by Jessie B. Rittenhouse. Also includes: a poem entitled To Omar Khayyam written by Andrew Lang; a brief biography of Khayyam; notes by Edward Fitzgerald on his translations; On Reading the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam in a Kentish Rose Garden by Mathilde Blind; comparative stanzas; a bibliography of foreign translations, Fitzgerald's English translations, American editions of Fitzgerald's translations, and later English translations. Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam is the title that Edward FitzGerald gave to his 1859 translation from Persian to English of a selection of quatrains attributed to Omar Khayyam (1048 - 1131), dubbed "the Astronomer-Poet of Persia". Although commercially unsuccessful at first, FitzGerald's work was popularised from 1861 onward by Whitley Stokes, and the work came to be greatly admired by the Pre-Raphaelites in England. FitzGerald had a third edition printed in 1872, which increased interest in the work in the United States. By the 1880s, the book was extremely popular throughout the English-speaking world, to the extent that numerous 'Omar Khayyam clubs' were formed and there was a 'fin de siecle cult of the Rubaiyat.' FitzGerald's work has been published in several hundred editions and has inspired similar translation efforts in English, Hindi and in many other languages.
