Dus geen linguïstische geschiedenis waarin de evolutie van de taal wordt beschreven en die slechts taalkundigen zou kunnen interesseren. Bloemendal is het er daarentegen om te doen een antwoord te vinden op wat hij als kernvraag formuleert (blz. 11): hoe heeft het Latijn zich zo lang kunnen handhaven, ofwel: hoe heeft het een zo belangrijke positie weten te krijgen en te behouden? Het gaat dus om een problematiek die niet zozeer - of althans niet in de eerste plaats - diegene zal interesseren die uitsluitend voor de klassieke oudheid belangstelling heeft. (.) De eerste twee hoofdstukken geven een algemene inleiding op het gebruik van het Latijn van 750 v. Chr. tot 1750 n. Chr. . Hierin worden de grote lijnen geschetst die in andere hoofdstukken nader worden uitgewerkt; . Om zich van het Latijn te kunnen blijven bedienen, moesten de regels van de taal worden doorgegeven, waarin het onderwijs een cruciale rol speelde. Daarover handelt het derde hoofdstuk. Een belangrijk instituut dat de taal doorgaf en tegelijkertijd veranderde, was de Kerk. Het 'Kerklatijn' wordt in het hoofdstuk 4 besproken. Verder was het nodig dat teksten werden overgeleverd, wat nooit rimpelloos verliep, zeker niet in de tijd van het handgeschreven boek. Daarom ontstonden al in de oudheid vormen van filologie, het grondig lezen en zo nodig corrigeren van teksten die in het proces van het doorgeven veranderd waren. Dat proces vormt het onderwerp van het vijfde hoofdstuk. Als dan de voorwaarden voor het voortbestaan van het Latijn geschetst zijn, kan de inhoud aan bod komen. Achtereenvolgens zullen de rol van het Latijn in het doorgeven van de idealen van humanitas en charitas (hoofdstuk 6), het gebruik van het Latijn in de kerk, in de staat en in de rechtspraak, en in het politieke denken (hoofdstuk 7) worden besproken. Een hoofdstuk over het Latijn in Nederland en in het Nederlands sluit het boek. Dan volgen nog een appendix (blz. 207-214) met de Latijnse originele tekst van de citaten die in het exposé in Nederlandse vertaling zijn opgenomen, een selectieve literatuurlijst en een register.Uit deze summiere inhoudsopgave zal al duidelijk blijken hoezeer deze cultuurgeschiedenis van een wereldtaal in belangrijke mate ook een Europese cultuurgeschiedenis is geworden en het is geen geringe krachttoer van de auteur dat hij daarin geslaagd is binnen relatief kort bestek, zonder essentiële informatie te moeten opofferen en zonder afbreuk te doen aan de vlotte leesbaarheid. De auteur heeft daarenboven de tekst gelardeerd met relevante citaten. Enkele kaderartikels op grijze achtergrond geven nadere informatie over belangrijke figuren als Cicero, Isidorus van Sevilla, Augustinus, Thomas van Aquino, Erasmus, Lorenzo Valla of over de verschillende schriftsoorten. Verder krijgt de lezer ook heel wat informatie over onderwerpen die in de geschiedenisboeken doorgaans onderbelicht blijven zoals o.m. gebruik en verspreiding van de papyrusrol en codex, de principes van de filologische tekstkritiek, publiceren in de oudheid.'
