Original 3/4 leather binding, black pebbled cloth boards, gilt lettering ("Sheet Anchor") on the spine. This copy was variously owned (and presumably employed on ship, hence the damage?) by ? Rybus… of the "Sea Serpent," New York (signed on title page), by First Lieut. J. W. Congdon of the U. S. Revenue "Lincoln," Pacific Coast, 1873 (Intro page), and the same J. W. Congdon promoted to Captain in the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service (front free end page). Fair condition: the binding is about very good with some soil to bottom corner of the front board and some light edge wear; the title page has a large section clipped away top right corner, has some heavy staining plus a tear that was repaired from the rear some time ago; there is occasional foxing throughout and some faint evident of a moisture stain at the top of the last 20 or so leaves.

Minor infills mostly affecting the margins and neat line. From a local Maine coastal barn, this uncommon nautical chart has been professionally conserved. A working chart, small light notations in pencil remain, showing progress in navigation. W. Hooker, engraver; D.R. Harrison, lettering (illustratore).
