He believes that this is the best way to achieve public support. His book should do just this. It is one of the most wide-ranging, popular symposiums on the subject of birds for the ordinary bird-watcher and bird lover in existence, imposing not only for its subject matter, which naturally chiefly concerns American birds, but also for the range of authors, beginning with a foreword by Stewart Udall, Secretary of the Department of the Interior, who emphasizes that in this technological age there is necessity for us to learn about the inter-relationships of all living things. All aspects of birds are treated, beginning with a look at the birds themselves and what they are, what they mean to us, their place in the arts, in recreation, as an economic problem, in nature, and finally their conservation and protection. Corners are sharp, but the green color is rubbed away to varying degrees. The rear end papers have some foxing. The DJ has a 2" up the bottom edge of the front flap. There are other tears-one of the back panel and one on the top front. The corners of the DJ have some chipping/creasing/discoloration. General shelf wear. The back of the DJ has a damp stain. The section of the cloth behind this stain is ever-so slightly bubbled. Some soiling of the text block In spite of all this, this book is square and tight. This book covers, birds of prey, birds and hunting, birds and pesticides; influence of birds in art and our lives; birds and the design of airplanes which is not to be confused with another section on birds co-existing with airports. Since this book predates, the banning of DDT in the U.S., it might be a good read.
